What Is the Difference Between Music Therapy and Music Lessons/Classes?

In Music Therapy:
  • The focus is on well-being and addressing non-music goals.
  • During the session, the music therapist facilitates music interventions in order to address the client's goals and objectives.
  • After the session, the music therapist documents client progress.

In Lessons:
  • The focus is on developing musical skills and learning how to play an instrument.
  • During the lesson, the instructor reviews old pieces, provides feedback, and introduces new pieces/concepts

In Music Classes:
Individualized or group music classes can be designed based on interests or for those who wish to explore or learn more about a specific kind of music, history, composition, recording, or participate in recreational music-making.

Is 1:1 or Group Therapy Better for Me?

1:1 Music Therapy:
  • is tailored to the individual client's strengths, needs, and preferences.
  • does not necessarily provide opportunities to work on social goals and objectives with peers.
  • is appropriate for clients who are not ready for group music therapy (ex. clients who are uncomfortable in group settings or clients who exhibit aggressive or disruptive behaviors).
  • usually costs more per client than group music therapy.

Group Music Therapy:
  • is tailored to the group's strengths, needs, and preferences.
  • does not provide as much individualized attention as 1:1 music therapy.
  • is especially appropriate for clients with social goals and objectives.
  • usually costs less per client than 1:1 music therapy.
